Making Them Cowboys

In meetings in Japan, delegations sit in two rows (rarely in a circle or U shape), with ranking group members facing each other. This hierarchy is a sign of respect for one's position.

Gift giving is significant, and the wrapping/presentation is often more important than the gift itself. Fortunately, the Japanese love everything "Cowboy" (John Wayne is especially famous among older generations) which worked out well thanks to the courtesy of swag from Visit Fort Worth.

Our visit with Governor Ryuta Ibaragi (伊原木 隆太) of Okayama Prefecture, and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo, was very formal but also quite fun. Note to self - bring more bandanas next time.
